Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost of the Kindergarten Supplemental Instructional Hours program?

TTuition is $2,950 per student for the school year or $295 per month, August through May. If tuition is paid in full at once, a 10 percent discount will be applied. There also is a one-time, non-refundable registration fee of $100. The cost of lunch is not included in the tuition. Tuition helps cover the cost of the additional hours of instruction that are not offered in the half-day, tuition-free programs at all Canyons elementary schools.

What forms of payment are accepted?

If paying for the entire school year, you can pay with a credit card. Monthly tuition payments will be automatically deducted from the credit card information provided on your contract agreement. Monthly payments will be deducted on the 1st of every month beginning in August and ending in May.

What if my account changes or my credit card expires and I miss a payment?

Failure to make payments two consecutive months will result in removal of the program. If there are changes to your account or credit card, please notify CSD’s Instructional Supports Department immediately to avoid account delinquency.

Are scholarships available?

Financial-need scholarships are available for students who qualify. Scholarship applications are linked through the program’s online application or can be requested through the Instructional Supports Department. Please call 801-826-5045 for more information.

When will I be notified about my status in the program?

Families who apply during the initial enrollment window will be notified by April 21 if they have been placed in a program or on a waiting list. Families who apply after the initial enrollment window will be notified within two weeks of their application if they have been placed in a program or on a waiting list.

My child was offered a spot in the Supplemental Instructional Hours program. What are my next steps?

If placement is offered during the initial enrollment window, you have until May 5 to pay the registration fee of $100, and sign the program agreements using the online application. A link will be e-mailed to you with payment and agreement instructions.

If offered placement after the initial enrollment window, you will have 48 hours to complete the program registration, pay the registration fee of $100, and sign the program agreements.

If I do not accept the spot that is offered to me, can I change my mind later?

If you decline placement in the program, your child’s spot will be offered to someone else.  If you choose to remain on the waiting list, you may be offered a spot if space becomes available. If you choose not to remain on the waiting list, you can request to be added back to the list.

What if I start the program and then change my mind?

You may withdraw from the program at any time. If you decide to withdraw from the program, your account or credit card information will be shredded. If you paid in full, you will receive a refund for the remainder of the school year. If the school in which you are receiving Supplemental Instructional Hours is not your boundary school, and you wish to remain enrolled in the school’s traditional half-day kindergarten program, you will need to complete a permit application. Continued enrollment at the school is not guaranteed for out-of-boundary students who withdraw from the program.

How will my kindergarten student get to school?

In boundary students will have access to safe walking routes or busing. If your child qualifies for transportation services, he or she will ride the kindergarten bus with the morning-session kindergarten students and will ride home with the afternoon-session kindergarten students. Parents will need to provide transportation if their child is admitted to the program at an out-of-boundary school.

Will my student be with a licensed teacher?

Yes, your student will receive supplemental instructional hours from a licensed teacher.

How many supplemental hours of instruction are provided?

Traditional half-day kindergarten programs are approximately two hours and 40 minutes.  Students enrolled in the supplemental hours of instruction program will receive nearly four hours of additional instruction. Students enrolled in the supplemental hours of instruction program will begin and end school at the same time as the school’s first through fifth grade students. Bell schedules for all Canyons District schools can be easily accessed on the CSD website, www.canyonsdistrict.org. The schedules are found in ”Parents and Community” under the Resources tab at the top of the page.

What are the benefits of the Supplemental Hours of Instruction program?

Students who receive supplemental hours of instruction in kindergarten are more prepared for school. They do better with the transition to first grade, show significant gains in school socialization and are equipped with stronger learning skills.

What if my preferred location does not have enough students to implement the program?

If your preferred location is unable to start due to low enrollment, every effort will be made to offer you a spot at another location. In the event that all other programs are full, you will be placed on the wait list of your choice in accordance with your application date and time.

What if I am offered a spot at a school other than my stated preference?

Space in the program is limited. Spots will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.  This means that preference will not be guaranteed. For example, if your preferred school is Altara Elementary but the classes at Altara filled before your application came up in the time-stamped line of applicants, then you would be placed at a different school. If you are offered a spot at a school other than your stated preference, you have the option to accept or decline the spot. Should you choose to decline, you will then have the option to be placed at the bottom of the waiting or to be removed entirely from the system.

Why is Willow Springs only open to boundary students?

Willow Spring Elementary is on moratorium. Section J of the Canyons School District policy states, “School enrollment moratorium”: means an action by the Board of Education to designate a school as not open for permit enrollment for nonresident students, because the school is operating above the open enrollment threshold.

Who is eligible for the Supplemental Hours of Instruction program?

Students who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2017 are eligible for the program.  Students residing within Canyons School District boundaries are given preference.  Students who do not live in Canyons School District boundaries but have siblings who have been attending a Canyons District school are also given preference.  Students who do not live in Canyons School District may apply and will be offered available spots after in boundary students have been admitted. Out of district students are not eligible for scholarships.
